Man Charged With Felony Assault After Allegedly Firing Gun During Northeast Minneapolis Shooting

MINNEAPOLIS MN — A 24-year-old man has been charged with felony second-degree assault after prosecutors allege he fired a gun during a June shooting in northeast Minneapolis that left multiple people wounded.
Pierre Hampton is charged in Hennepin County District Court with second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon. The charge carries a maximum sentence of seven years in prison and a $14,000 fine. According to the complaint, because the alleged offense involved a firearm, the charge is also subject to a three-year mandatory minimum sentence if convicted, subject to applicable sentencing laws and any court determinations.
The charge stems from a shooting reported around 12:30 a.m. on June 22 near University Avenue NE and Hennepin Avenue NE.
According to the criminal complaint, officers responding to the area found one person, identified in court documents by the initials T.C., unconscious on the ground with a gunshot wound. Investigators also found bullet damage to a red Dodge Charger and recovered 20 discharged cartridge casings that authorities determined came from multiple firearms.
Police later learned that two additional people suffering from gunshot wounds had arrived at Hennepin County Medical Center. The complaint identifies them as J.B., who suffered a gunshot wound to the leg, and Hampton, who was shot in the right arm.
Investigators reviewed surveillance footage and spoke with witnesses. According to the complaint, a physical fight broke out as people were leaving a restaurant near 1st Avenue NE and University Avenue NE.
Prosecutors allege an unidentified man retrieved a firearm from a Chrysler 300 and began shooting toward Hampton and J.B. as they ran across the street. The complaint alleges the unidentified shooter continued firing as the Chrysler made a U-turn.
Surveillance footage allegedly showed Hampton hiding behind a vehicle before standing up and firing toward the Chrysler as it traveled away, according to the complaint.
The complaint states Hampton then ran toward T.C., and the two traveled toward the intersection of University and Hennepin avenues before T.C. fell to the ground. Prosecutors allege T.C. dropped a firearm and Hampton picked it up before walking away.
Hampton arrived at HCMC a short time later for treatment of his gunshot wound.
According to the complaint, Hampton initially told an investigator that he had been with family but could not provide details and indicated he had been intoxicated. During a subsequent statement on June 23, Hampton reportedly acknowledged an altercation had occurred outside but said he did not know the people involved. He allegedly told investigators he heard gunshots, ran across the street and then “blacked out,” saying he could not remember what happened afterward.
Hampton was in custody at the Hennepin County Jail at the time the complaint was filed.
The allegations contained in a criminal complaint are accusations and have not been proven in court. Hampton is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
