Driver Cited After Late-Night Crash Damages Utilities in Apple Valley

APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA - Police say a 36-year-old Apple Valley man was cited for failure to drive with due care after a single-vehicle crash Monday night that caused significant damage to city property along Pilot Knob Road.

According to the Apple Valley Police Department, officers were dispatched around 10:32 p.m. on October 13, 2025, to the 13000 block of Pilot Knob Road, between Elkwood Drive and Embry Way, for a report of a vehicle crash involving a power pole and other structures.

Preliminary investigation determined that the 2019 Mazda CX-5 was traveling northbound on Pilot Knob Road when the driver reportedly dozed off. The vehicle veered off the curve and struck a tree barrier. It then collided with a power pole, an electrical box, and a fire hydrant before spinning and coming to rest after hitting another tree on the right side.

Police say the crash damaged multiple pieces of public infrastructure, including a power box and power lines, prompting a request for the utilities in the area to repair the damage. Limitless received a couple of reports of people without power in the area due to the crash.

The driver, identified as a 36-year-old male from Apple Valley, declined medical evaluation and had no visible injuries, according to the report. Alcohol was initially suspected, and officers conducted field sobriety testing and a preliminary breath test, which registered a .00 blood alcohol concentration. Officers determined there were no signs of intoxication.

No other vehicles were involved in the crash, and no injuries were reported.

The driver was cited for failure to drive with due care, and the case was closed as a non-injury property damage crash.
