Richfield Man Arrested After Woman Found Dead in Basement
RICHFIELD, MINNESOTA: A Richfield man is in custody after police discovered a woman dead early Sunday morning during what began as a reported medical incident.
According to the Richfield Police Department, at approximately 5:01 a.m., Shay Michael Benson, 37, of 6411 Bloomington Avenue South, called 911 to report a medical emergency involving a female roommate. When officers arrived, they located a 37-year-old woman lying on the floor of the basement bathroom. She was suffering from a large laceration to the top of her head. Emergency personnel provided lifesaving measures, but the victim died at the scene.
Police say signs of a struggle were observed in the basement living area. Benson, who had called 911, was found covered in blood with fresh injuries to his hands. Investigators noted that his explanation of events appeared inconsistent with the physical evidence at the scene.
Benson was taken into custody on suspicion of murder.
The identity of the victim has not yet been released, pending notification of the family. Authorities emphasized that the case remains an active investigation.
