Fiery Crash Involving Squad Car and Dump Truck in Shakopee
SHAKOPEE, MINNESOTA—A Shakopee police officer suffered minor injuries after a fiery two-vehicle crash involving a squad car and a dump truck at a busy intersection Monday afternoon.
Emergency crews were dispatched to the scene around 4:40 p.m. on July 28, 2025, at the intersection of Canterbury Road and Highway 101. The crash, which occurred while the squad car was responding to an emergency call with lights and sirens activated, drew a large response from the Shakopee Fire Department, Shakopee Police Department, Minnesota State Patrol, and Minnesota Department of Transportation. Witnesses at the scene tell us they could see the smoke as a result of this crash from Jordan, Minnesota.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the preliminary investigation shows the Shakopee Police Department squad was traveling eastbound on Highway 101, responding to an emergency with their lights and sirens on, as the dump truck was entering onto westbound Highway 101 from northbound Canterbury Road, when the two vehicles collided. Authorities say the collision caused the dump truck's gas tank to rupture, sparking a fire that engulfed both the squad car and the truck. The Shakopee officer involved was transported from the scene with minor injuries to St Francis Hospital. The driver of the dump truck was not injured.
Traffic in the area was heavily impacted as crews worked to extinguish the blaze and begin the investigation. Highway 101 was closed in both directions from Valley Park Drive S to Shenand Drive. Canterbury Road was closed from Highway 101 to 4th Avenue East, and Valley Industrial Blvd N was also briefly closed from Canterbury Road to Valley Park Drive while crews worked to clear the crash and investigate the cause.
The Minnesota State Patrol has taken the lead on the crash investigation and is working to determine the sequence of events leading up to the collision. No additional details have been released regarding the emergency the officer was responding to at the time.
Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
