SAINT PAUL MN: — A child was safely rescued from a pond on Saint Paul’s East Side Monday afternoon after a police drone reached the scene ahead of responding officers and helped direct them to the child, according to the Saint Paul Police Department.
Police said a good Samaritan called 911 after spotting a child in a pond who appeared to be struggling to get out.
Following the call, Saint Paul Police launched one of the department’s docked drones, which was remotely flown by a trained officer. The drone arrived at the pond approximately two minutes before officers reached the scene.
According to police, the drone provided responding officers with information about the child’s location and condition before they arrived. Officers then located the child and safely pulled them from the water.
Police said the child’s family reported that the child has autism and had wandered away from home without the family realizing it.
The department credited the quick response and information provided by the drone with helping officers locate the child and bring the incident to a safe conclusion.
