SAINT PAUL MN: A 66-year-old woman is facing felony and gross misdemeanor assault charges after authorities allege she kicked a St. Paul police officer during an incident Sunday night in Saint Paul.
According to the criminal complaint, officers were dispatched around 10:30 p.m. on May 11 to the area of 1136 Larpenteur Avenue after multiple callers reported that a woman appeared to need help and had allegedly been attempting to flag down passing vehicles.
Officers located Patricia Ann Sperry, born Sept. 30, 1959, sitting on a retaining wall. The complaint states Sperry appeared heavily intoxicated, was swaying back and forth, had slurred speech, and bloodshot, watery eyes. Officers allegedly attempted to determine where Sperry lived so they could get her home safely, but she refused to cooperate.
According to the complaint, officers advised Sperry that if they could not safely get her home, she would need to be transported to a hospital by ambulance. The complaint states she continued refusing to cooperate.
Officers then noticed what appeared to be a wallet inside a purse around Sperry’s neck. According to the complaint, Sperry swung at an officer who attempted to retrieve the wallet. Officers then placed her in handcuffs and escorted her to a squad car while waiting for medics to arrive.
The complaint states that while Officer Kreimer was assisting Sperry into the squad, Sperry turned and kicked the officer in the groin, causing the officer to fall to the ground in pain.
According to the complaint, Sperry was also uncooperative with medics after they arrived and refused transport to a hospital. She was ultimately taken to jail.
Sperry is charged in Ramsey County District Court with one count of fourth-degree assault causing demonstrable bodily harm to a peace officer, a felony, and one count of fourth-degree assault physically assaulting a peace officer, a gross misdemeanor.
Court records show the felony charge carries a maximum penalty of three years in prison, a $6,000 fine, or both. The gross misdemeanor charge carries a maximum penalty of 364 days in jail, a $3,000 fine, or both.
Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
