Three Killed, Four Injured in Crash Involving Stolen Vehicle in Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS MN — Three people were killed and four others were seriously injured early Tuesday after a stolen vehicle carrying seven people collided with a tractor-trailer in southeast Minneapolis, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
Police said officers responded to the crash at approximately 4:12 a.m. on Sept. 29 and found seven people trapped inside a stolen Hyundai Elantra.
Two males seated in the front of the vehicle and a female passenger in the rear died at the scene, according to police. Their identities are expected to be released by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner’s Office.
Minneapolis firefighters extricated four other passengers from the rear of the vehicle, including two 18-year-old men, a 17-year-old girl and a 17-year-old boy. All four were transported to Hennepin Healthcare with potentially life-threatening injuries.
According to updated preliminary information from MPD, the Elantra was traveling west on Southeast Fourth Street when it struck the trailer of a tractor-trailer traveling south on the Interstate 35W exit ramp and crossing Southeast Fourth Street.
The Elantra became lodged underneath the trailer, and both vehicles eventually came to a stop on Ninth Avenue Southeast between Southeast Fourth Street and University Avenue Southeast, police said.
Investigators believe the stolen vehicle's speed contributed to the crash. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured and cooperated with officers, according to MPD.
Traffic investigators and forensic scientists processed the scene and collected evidence. The southbound I-35W exit to Southeast Fourth Street and Ninth Avenue Southeast were closed for several hours during the investigation.
Police said the investigation remains ongoing as authorities work to determine the sequence of events leading up to the crash.
The incident is being investigated under MPD case number 26-282263.
