USPS Proposes Temporary 8% Shipping Rate Increase Beginning in April

Published: March 25th, 2026 |

WASHINGTON: The United States Postal Service announced plans to temporarily raise prices on several of its shipping services, filing notice with the Postal Regulatory Commission as part of an effort to better align transportation costs with current market conditions.

According to the filing, the proposed change includes an 8% increase in base postage prices for select domestic competitive products. The adjustment would apply to:

  • Priority Mail Express

  • Priority Mail

  • USPS Ground Advantage

  • Parcel Select

The Postal Service said First-Class Mail, including Forever stamps, would not be affected.

If approved by the Postal Regulatory Commission, the new rates would take effect April 26 at midnight Central Time and remain in place until January 17, 2027. Officials described the increase as a temporary measure designed to bridge the gap until a more permanent pricing model can be implemented.

In its announcement, USPS cited rising transportation expenses as a key factor behind the change. While competitors have implemented fuel surcharges and other fees, the Postal Service said it has largely avoided those charges, noting the proposed increase is significantly lower than many industry surcharges.

The agency emphasized the adjustment is intended to support its long-term financial sustainability while maintaining its universal service obligation — delivering mail and packages nationwide at least six days a week.

The Postal Regulatory Commission will review the proposal before issuing a decision ahead of the planned April implementation date.
