Waconia man charged after allegedly pointing handgun at driver during road rage confrontation

WACONIA MN: A Waconia man is facing felony charges after authorities allege he pointed a handgun at another man during a road rage confrontation in Carver County.
According to a criminal complaint filed in Carver County, Jeffrey Lee Campbell, 48, has been charged with one count of second-degree assault with a dangerous weapon and one count of threats of violence. The charges stem from an incident on Aug. 3, 2026.
According to the complaint, Carver County deputies were dispatched at approximately 4:52 p.m. to the area of 101 1st St. W. in Waconia for a report of a disturbance involving a man allegedly pointing a firearm at another person. Dispatch received a description of a green Jeep Wrangler and a partial license plate.
The complaint states the victim was riding in the passenger seat of a black Cadillac while his 15-year-old son, who had recently received his learner's permit, was driving. A 12-year-old son was also in the vehicle.
According to the complaint, the family was traveling eastbound on Burandt Boulevard when a Jeep allegedly began tailgating them and repeatedly honking. The victim reportedly motioned for the Jeep to pass, and after it turned onto Fair Circle, instructed his son to follow the vehicle so he could speak with the driver.
The complaint alleges the Jeep drove around a cul-de-sac and stopped facing the Cadillac. The victim exited his vehicle and yelled at the driver, asking what his problem was. Authorities allege Campbell then pointed a black handgun out of the Jeep toward the victim's head and ordered him to get back into his vehicle before driving away.
The victim told deputies he believed the firearm was a small black handgun and said he felt threatened.
According to the complaint, the victim's 15-year-old son told investigators he saw the driver point the handgun at his father's head for approximately four to five seconds and feared the driver was going to shoot him. The younger son reported seeing the driver display a black handgun and hearing him tell the victim to return to his vehicle before leaving the area.
Deputies identified a possible suspect after locating a green 2024 Jeep Wrangler with a license plate similar to the one reported by the victim. The vehicle was registered to Campbell.
According to the complaint, deputies later contacted Campbell at his residence. Campbell acknowledged being involved in an encounter with the occupants of the black Cadillac and admitted he was carrying a handgun during the incident. He told deputies that after the other driver approached his Jeep, he removed his Sig Sauer P365 handgun from its holster and placed it on his lap. Campbell denied pointing the firearm at the victim and denied there had been a road rage incident before the encounter on Fair Circle.
Investigators noted in the complaint that, based on the height of the Jeep and Cadillac and the positioning of the vehicles, the handgun would have needed to be raised above the Jeep's door for the occupants of the Cadillac to see it, rather than remaining on Campbell's lap as he claimed.
Authorities later executed a search warrant at Campbell's residence and recovered multiple firearms, including the Sig Sauer P365 handgun Campbell identified as the firearm involved in the incident, according to the complaint.
The allegations contained in the criminal complaint are accusations. Campbell is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
