WISCONSIN: - A Wisconsin State Patrol trooper has died from injuries he sustained after falling from a bridge while responding to a traffic pursuit last month, state officials announced.
Trooper Bradley Ritger, 29, died on Friday, Oct. 2, according to the Wisconsin Department of Transportation and Wisconsin State Patrol.
Officials said Ritger was responding to a traffic pursuit on Sept. 21 when he deployed a tire-deflation device on a bridge west of the Dunn County-Eau Claire County line.
As Ritger moved toward a position of cover, he fell from the bridge onto the roadway below, according to the State Patrol. Lifesaving efforts were performed, and Ritger received critical medical care following the fall. He ultimately succumbed to his injuries nearly two weeks later.
Ritger joined the Wisconsin State Patrol as a member of its 67th Recruit Class and served in the agency's Northwest Region for nearly five years, primarily in the Dunn County area.
During his career, Ritger became certified as a general law enforcement instructor, mobile field force team member and squad leader, and salvage vehicle inspector. Before joining the State Patrol, he served with the Wisconsin Department of Corrections for three years.
The State Patrol remembered Ritger as a dedicated public servant with a strong work ethic who approached his duties with professionalism, integrity and compassion.
"Whether assisting the public, supporting his fellow troopers, or taking on difficult challenges, he consistently demonstrated compassion and willingness to help wherever needed," the agency said.
A law enforcement memorial vehicle has been placed at the Wisconsin State Patrol's Northwest Region Post in Eau Claire. Members of the public may leave cards, flowers and other condolences there.
