Woman Charged After Allegedly Assaulting Officer During Large Fight at Minneapolis Apartment

MINNEAPOLIS MN — A 22-year-old woman is facing multiple charges after authorities say officers encountered a crowd of roughly 30 people during a reported fight at a Minneapolis apartment building early Sunday morning.
Latrice Burtis, 22, is charged in Hennepin County with gross misdemeanor obstruction of legal process, gross misdemeanor fourth-degree assault of a peace officer and misdemeanor disorderly conduct stemming from the September 27 incident.
According to the criminal complaint, University of Minnesota police officers were dispatched at approximately 4:47 a.m. to the Bridges Apartments on University Avenue Southeast after receiving a report of a possible fight and people refusing to leave at the request of staff.
When officers arrived, they encountered multiple groups of people in a second-floor lobby, including approximately 30 people who were yelling, the complaint alleges. Officers began attempting to disperse the crowd using the stairs and elevator.
Authorities allege several people continued fighting as officers worked to separate those involved. The complaint states Burtis, who was reportedly wearing a white tank top, was among those involved and was allegedly swinging in multiple directions.
An officer grabbed Burtis in an attempt to stop the fight, according to the complaint. Prosecutors allege Burtis then threw a punch toward the officer and continued attempting to strike her.
At one point, Burtis allegedly struck the officer, causing a flashlight to come loose from the officer’s vest and fall to the floor. The complaint further alleges Burtis told the officer, “I’m going to hurt you,” while continuing to swing in her direction.
Another officer reported that Burtis appeared to grab or push the officer while police were attempting to gain control of the situation, according to the complaint.
Burtis was eventually brought toward a wall and handcuffed, and officers later cleared the area and escorted her to a patrol vehicle.
The two gross misdemeanor charges each carry a maximum potential sentence of 364 days in jail and/or a $3,000 fine. The disorderly conduct charge carries a maximum potential sentence of 90 days in jail and/or a $1,000 fine.
The allegations contained in the criminal complaint are accusations. Burtis is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
