Red Flag Warning Issued for Minnesota and Western Wisconsin Amid Critical Fire Conditions

TWIN CITIES, MINNESOTA - Central and Southern Minnesota - including the Twin Cities, along with portions of Western Wisconsin, are under a Red Flag Warning today, Monday, May 12, 2025, due to a dangerous combination of hot temperatures, low humidity, and gusty winds that are expected to contribute to critical fire weather conditions.

The National Weather Service in the Twin Cities has issued the warning, effective from 12:00 PM to 9:00 PM CDT. During this period, weather conditions will be ideal for wildfires to ignite and spread rapidly out of control.

Dangerous Fire Weather Pattern

The latest forecast predicts high temperatures in the 80s and lower 90s, coupled with relative humidity values as low as 15 to 25 percent. These arid conditions will be exacerbated by south-southwest winds of 10 to 15 mph, with gusts potentially reaching 30 mph. This potent mix of dry air, warm temperatures, and strong winds is expected to create an environment ripe for rapid fire development and spread.

Elevated Risk Across the Region

Areas across central and southern Minnesota, including communities in the Twin Cities metro, Mankato, Rochester, and parts of western Wisconsin, are particularly at risk. With dry vegetation and fuels already in place, even a small spark could quickly evolve into a dangerous wildfire.

Authorities Urge Caution

Officials strongly advise the public to avoid outdoor burning activities during the warning period. Fire pits, campfires, grills, and fireworks should be postponed. Residents are also asked to be cautious with any activities that could create sparks, such as operating heavy machinery, using chainsaws, or discarding cigarettes improperly.

A Red Flag Warning is not issued lightly. Under these conditions, wildfires can spread rapidly, threatening lives, property, and natural resources.

What You Can Do

  • Refrain from outdoor burning.

  • Secure trailer chains and avoid parking over dry grass.

  • Report any signs of smoke or fire immediately to local authorities.

  • Stay informed through local news and official weather channels for updates throughout the day.

The Red Flag Warning highlights the importance of community vigilance and preparation. With heightened fire risks expected to persist until evening, residents are encouraged to act responsibly and help prevent any unnecessary fire incidents.

Stay tuned for further updates as conditions evolve.
