Brooklyn Park Woman Charged in Minneapolis Shooting That Left Man Wounded, Ended in Crash With Police Squad

MINNEAPOLIS MN: A Brooklyn Park woman is facing multiple felony charges, including attempted second-degree murder, following a Minneapolis shooting that left a man wounded and ended with a crash involving a Minneapolis police squad car, according to a criminal complaint filed in Hennepin County District Court.

Prosecutors have charged Angela Arroyo Hernandez, 20, of Brooklyn Park, with attempted second-degree intentional murder, drive-by shooting, possession of a machine gun conversion device, and criminal vehicular operation resulting in bodily harm.

According to the complaint, Minneapolis police officers were on routine patrol near East 33rd Street and Park Avenue South shortly after 1 a.m. on May 16 when they heard gunshots and received a ShotSpotter alert indicating gunfire nearby. Officers responded to a reported shooting in the 3200 block of 5th Avenue South.

Police found a man suffering from at least two gunshot wounds to the chest. Officers rendered aid before the victim was transported to a hospital for treatment.

According to the complaint, witnesses reported seeing several individuals approach the property before the shooting. One witness told investigators he saw an armed suspect outside a garage moments before hearing gunfire. Another witness reported that multiple individuals approached him and threatened to kill him before he fled and hid beneath a vehicle.

Investigators recovered spent shell casings, live ammunition and a handgun magazine near the scene.

Surveillance footage reviewed by investigators allegedly showed a black Infiniti sedan arriving in the area less than 10 minutes before the shooting. The complaint states four males exited the vehicle and were seen handling handguns, while Hernandez allegedly recorded them with her cellphone. Prosecutors allege Hernandez later posed with firearms before returning to the driver's seat.

The complaint alleges Hernandez then drove the group near the victim's residence. Moments later, several males ran toward the property. Surveillance audio allegedly captured someone saying "pop his ass" before six gunshots rang out.

Authorities allege the group fled back to the Infiniti, which Hernandez drove away from the area. About one minute later, the vehicle returned to the scene and another 10 gunshots were heard.

Responding officers observed multiple people running toward a vehicle parked near where the victim was shot. When police attempted a traffic stop, the driver allegedly fled.

According to the complaint, Hernandez was driving the Infiniti when it later collided with a marked Minneapolis police squad car being operated by an officer responding to the shooting. The officer suffered bodily harm in the crash. All occupants of the Infiniti reportedly fled on foot.

A search of the Infiniti allegedly led investigators to recover a loaded Glock pistol equipped with an auto-sear device, which prosecutors say allowed the firearm to function as a machine gun. Investigators also recovered additional evidence, including documents belonging to Hernandez.

The complaint further states that cellphone location data allegedly placed Hernandez's phone at the shooting scene when the incident occurred.

Hernandez remains in custody. Authorities said the investigation into the male suspects allegedly involved in the shooting remains ongoing.

All charges are allegations, and Hernandez is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
