Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz Announces Retirement After 31 Years of Service
BURNSVILLE, MINNESOTA — After more than three decades of service to the community, Burnsville Police Chief Tanya Schwartz has announced she will retire at the end of May 2026.
Schwartz’s career with the Burnsville Police Department spans over 30 years, beginning in 1995 when she joined as a Community Service Officer. Over the course of her career, she steadily rose through the ranks—becoming the department’s first female Sergeant, later Captain, and ultimately Chief of Police in 2019.
Her leadership has marked a period of continued focus on both public safety and internal department culture, with an emphasis on officer wellness, professional development, and community engagement.
Leadership Focused on Wellness and Community
As Chief, Schwartz prioritized initiatives to strengthen officers' well-being and resilience while expanding community connections.
City officials say her leadership approach centered on the belief that supporting officers directly translates into better service for residents.
“She has led with compassion, professionalism, honor, and care,” Burnsville City Manager Gregg Lindberg said in a statement. “Tanya has been the right leader at the right time, strengthening the culture of the department, championing staff well-being, and reinforcing Burnsville’s commitment to public safety.”
During her tenure, Schwartz helped guide the department through both everyday public safety challenges and more difficult moments that tested the organization and the community.
Reflecting on a Career of Service
In announcing her retirement, Schwartz reflected on the relationships and experiences that defined her time with the department.
“Serving alongside the women and men of the Burnsville Police Department has been an extraordinary privilege,” Schwartz said. “I have witnessed their courage, their sacrifice, and their unwavering commitment to this community.”
She described the department as a “second family,” highlighting both the accomplishments and challenges shared over the years.
“Together we weathered storms that tested us all, and through it, they showed remarkable strength, compassion, and resilience,” she said. “I am deeply proud of this department, and I know it will continue to rise to every challenge and serve with excellence in the years ahead.”
Transition Plans Underway
Schwartz will remain in her role through the end of May and will assist with transition planning to ensure continuity in leadership within the department.
City officials say more details about succession and next steps are expected in the coming months.
The City of Burnsville plans to recognize and celebrate Schwartz’s decades of service in the weeks ahead.
