Dakota County Public Health Clarifies SNAP Benefits and Warns of Scams After Federal Shutdown Ends

Published: November 24, 2025

DAKOTA COUNTY, MINNESOTA –Dakota County officials are working to clear up confusion and calm fears about food assistance in the wake of the recent federal government shutdown. In a message shared with schools and community partners, Dakota County Public Health emphasized that the federal shutdown has ended and that food support programs in Minnesota are operating normally again.

SNAP and MFIP benefits back on regular schedule

According to the county, Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) and Minnesota Family Investment Program (MFIP) benefits are now being issued on their normal schedule. Households that already receive these benefits should see their funds loaded as usual to their EBT cards, which can be used at authorized grocery stores, farmers markets, and some online retailers.

Officials stressed that current recipients do not need to reapply at this time just because of the shutdown. Existing cases will continue under their usual timelines and reporting requirements. Families and individuals who are not currently enrolled can still apply for SNAP and MFIP online through the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families (DCYF) website and the state’s benefits portal, which you can find here: https://mnbenefits.mn.gov/.

Warning: Scammers Targeting SNAP Recipients

Dakota County is also warning residents about scams attempting to exploit the recent uncertainty.

The state has received reports of text messages, emails, and phone calls falsely claiming that SNAP recipients must repay benefits or provide personal information to keep their assistance. This is not true, officials said.

If you receive a suspicious message about your benefits:

  • Do not click links or give out your Social Security number, EBT card number, or PIN.

  • Do not send money or “repay” benefits to anyone contacting you by text, email, or phone.

  • Contact your county or Tribal Nation directly using a verified phone number if you have questions about your case.

Food Support is Still Available for Those Not on SNAP

For residents who are struggling but not currently enrolled in SNAP or MFIP, assistance is still available:

  • Apply for SNAP/MFIP: Visit the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families website for eligibility and application information. Again, you can find that link here: https://mnbenefits.mn.gov/.

  • Food shelves and free community meals: Dakota County notes that information about local food shelves and free meal programs is available to help fill gaps for families during this time. Many programs can be found through statewide food shelf locators and county resource pages.

Where to Find Official Updates

For official, up-to-date information on SNAP, MFIP, and other food programs, residents are encouraged to visit the Minnesota Department of Children, Youth, and Families website, which is posting ongoing updates related to federal funding and program operation
