Deputies Fired Upon While Serving Arrest Warrant in South Minneapolis

MINNEAPOLIS, MN: A large law enforcement response remains underway in South Minneapolis after Hennepin County Sheriff's Office deputies were fired upon while attempting to serve an arrest warrant Tuesday afternoon, June 9, 2026, just after 11:30 AM.
The incident began in the area of West 28th Street and Nicollet Avenue, at an apartment in the 2700 block of Nicollet Avenue, where deputies were attempting to execute an arrest warrant when shots were fired at law enforcement personnel. Authorities say deputies were not struck, and there have been no reported injuries throughout the incident. The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office and the Minneapolis Police Department quickly secured the area while additional law enforcement resources responded. Roads surrounding the scene were closed, and residents were urged to avoid the area to ensure the safety of both community members and first responders.
An emergency alert was sent by law enforcement around 1 PM on Tuesday.
As the situation escalated, authorities determined the suspect had barricaded themselves inside an apartment building. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded, including specialized tactical teams and crisis negotiators. Officials evacuated the apartment building and neighboring businesses and apartment buildings as a precaution, but the suspect remained inside.
According to an update released at approximately 3:52 p.m., law enforcement personnel were actively attempting to establish communication with the suspect, who was refusing to respond. Authorities deployed a drone to gain situational awareness inside the building; however, the suspect allegedly shot down the drone. Officials also reported that the suspect fired additional rounds during the standoff.
Despite the gunfire, authorities emphasized that there have been no injuries reported among law enforcement officers, residents, or bystanders.
By 4:45 p.m., officials identified the subject of the arrest warrant as Tyler Joseph O'Brien, 31. However, authorities cautioned that they could not yet definitively confirm that O'Brien was the individual involved in the shooting because law enforcement had not made direct contact with the person inside the apartment.
At that time, negotiators continued efforts to secure a peaceful surrender.
The ongoing standoff has drawn a significant law enforcement presence to the area, with tactical units, crisis negotiators, and aerial resources assisting in the operation.
Authorities continue to ask the public to avoid the area around West 28th Street and Nicollet Avenue while the incident remains active.
Law enforcement sent an updated alert about a shelter opening up around 2:45 PM.
