SAINT PAUL MN: Downtowner Woodfire Grill will permanently close its doors on Sunday, May 17, ending a nearly four-decade run in downtown St. Paul.
The restaurant announced the closure in a statement shared this week, saying owner Moe Sharif has decided to retire after operating the longtime downtown establishment for 38 years.
Sharif first opened the Downtowner in 1988, when the location operated as an older diner. The restaurant later underwent renovations in 2000 following the construction of the Xcel Energy Center, becoming a familiar destination for residents, concertgoers, hockey fans and downtown workers.
In the announcement, the Sharif family thanked the city of St. Paul, the restaurant’s staff and loyal customers for supporting the business throughout the years.
“The Downtowner has been a true icon in this city—a one-of-a-kind gem that will be deeply missed,” the statement said.
While retiring from the Downtowner, Sharif plans to remain involved in the St. Paul community. According to the family, he intends to spend more time with family and friends, travel, and assist at Burger Moe's alongside his son, Eddy Sharif.
The family also announced that the downtown property will become available for a future restaurant operator. Those interested in the space are encouraged to contact Eddy Sharif for additional information.
The restaurant invited customers to visit one final time before its last day of service on May 17.
“It has been our honor to be part of this community,” the statement said. “We hope the next torchbearer will continue a meaningful legacy in this space.”
