EAGAN, MINNESOTA - A local Scout is being recognized for their service project that is making a meaningful difference for animals awaiting adoption.
Scout Riley of Troop 7446 has successfully completed an Eagle Scout project benefiting the Animal Humane Society, focusing on improving the well-being of cats in shelter care.
As part of the project, Riley organized and led the creation of handmade cat wand toys, simple but effective tools designed to provide enrichment for shelter animals. These toys play an important role in reducing stress among cats, many of which can struggle with anxiety in a shelter environment. By encouraging play and interaction, the toys also help cats display their personalities more naturally to potential adopters.
Animal welfare experts note that increased engagement between animals and visitors can significantly improve adoption outcomes. When cats are more active and responsive, it often helps prospective adopters form stronger emotional connections, increasing the likelihood of a successful placement into a permanent home.
Riley’s project brought together more than 30 volunteers from the community, all working together to produce 80 cat wand toys for the shelter. The effort required planning, coordination, and leadership, key components of achieving the rank of Eagle Scout.
The completed toys were donated to support the daily enrichment activities at the Animal Humane Society, directly benefiting cats currently in their care.
The project highlights Riley’s commitment to community service and passion for animal welfare, while also demonstrating how youth-led initiatives can create tangible, positive impacts at the local level.
