Police Narrow Search to Black 2008-2011 Ford Focus in Fatal Farmington Hit-and-Run


FARMINGTON, MN — The Farmington Police Department has released an update in its investigation into Tuesday night's fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of a 13-year-old Apple Valley boy.

Following an examination of evidence recovered at the scene, investigators have now identified the suspected vehicle as a black 2008 to 2011 Ford Focus.

According to police, investigators recovered several vehicle parts from the crash scene, including the passenger-side exterior mirror, which helped narrow down the make, model, and model years of the suspect vehicle.

Authorities believe the vehicle involved will have:

  • Front-end damage

  • Passenger-side damage

  • A missing passenger-side exterior mirror

The crash occurred at approximately 9:44 p.m. Tuesday, July 14, at the intersection of Minnesota Highway 50 and Dushane Parkway, near the McDonald's in Farmington.

According to the preliminary investigation, two juvenile boys were crossing Highway 50 on bicycles when a westbound vehicle struck one of them before fleeing the scene without stopping.

The victim, a 13-year-old boy from Apple Valley, died at the scene despite life-saving efforts by bystanders, Farmington police officers, firefighters, and paramedics.

The Farmington Police Department says the investigation remains active and that investigators are committed to identifying the driver responsible.

"This remains an active investigation, and we are committed to doing everything we can to identify the driver and hold them accountable," the department said in its update.

Public Asked to Help Identify Vehicle

Investigators continue to ask anyone with information to come forward.

Police are specifically seeking anyone who:

  • Witnessed the crash.

  • Has dash camera or surveillance footage from the area around the time of the collision.

  • Has seen a black 2008 to 2011 Ford Focus with recent front-end or passenger-side damage.

  • Has any information that could help identify the vehicle or its driver.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Farmington Police Department at 651-280-6700. Police emphasize that even seemingly insignificant information can prove critical in helping investigators identify the vehicle and the person responsible.

ORIGINAL STORY - FARMINGTON, MN: Authorities are searching for the driver of a vehicle that struck and killed a 13-year-old bicyclist before fleeing the scene Tuesday night in Farmington.

According to the Farmington Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 9:44 p.m. on Tuesday, July 14, 2026, to the intersection of Minnesota Highway 50 and Dushane Parkway, near the McDonald's restaurant, for a report of a crash involving a motor vehicle and a bicyclist.

Juvenile Bicyclist Dies at the Scene

A preliminary investigation determined that two juvenile boys were crossing Highway 50 on bicycles when a vehicle traveling westbound struck one of them.

The driver did not stop after the collision and fled the scene.

Bystanders, Farmington police officers, firefighters, and paramedics immediately began life-saving efforts on the injured child. Despite those efforts, the victim died at the scene.

The victim has been identified only as a 13-year-old boy from Apple Valley. Authorities are withholding his name out of respect for the family and pending appropriate notifications.

Search Underway for Suspect Vehicle

Investigators are asking for the public's help in locating the vehicle believed to have been involved in the fatal crash.

Based on evidence collected during the investigation, police believe the suspect vehicle is:

  • A small black SUV

  • Has front-end or passenger-side damage

  • Is missing its passenger-side mirror

Anyone who witnessed the crash or has information that may help identify the vehicle is urged to contact the Farmington Police Department at651-280-6700.

Investigators are especially interested in speaking with anyone who was traveling in the area around the time of the crash or who may have dash camera footage or surveillance video showing the suspect vehicle before or after the collision. Police are also working with neighboring businesses to gather surveillance video to get an image of the vehicle.

Minnesota State Patrol Assisting Investigation

The Minnesota State Patrol responded to conduct the crash investigation and is assisting the Farmington Police Department as investigators work to identify the driver responsible.

The Farmington Police Department extended its deepest condolences to the victim's family, friends, and everyone affected by the tragedy.

The investigation remains active, and additional information is expected to be released as it becomes available.
