Farmington Fire Department to Conduct Ice Water Rescue Training This Week

Published: March 9, 2026.

FARMINGTON, MINNESOTA - Residents in Farmington may notice increased emergency activity near a local pond this week as firefighters conduct specialized cold-water rescue training.

According to the Farmington Fire Department, members of the department will be participating in Ice Water Rescue Training during the week of March 9, 2026, in the area of Deerbrooke Path and 195th Street West in Farmington. The training will involve firefighters operating on the ice and along the shoreline as they practice techniques for rescuing individuals who fall through frozen lakes, ponds, or rivers.

Emergency vehicles and personnel will be present throughout the exercise. Officials say the training is an important part of preparing firefighters for emergencies that can occur during Minnesota’s winter and early spring months, when fluctuating temperatures can weaken ice conditions and increase the risk of people or pets falling into icy water.

Residents traveling through the area may notice firefighters in protective gear on the ice, along with rescue equipment and emergency vehicles staged nearby. The activity is part of a planned training exercise, not an active emergency.

The department is asking drivers to use caution when traveling through the area and to follow any directions provided by emergency personnel while the training is underway. Ice rescue training helps firefighters practice rapid response, victim retrieval techniques, and cold-water survival procedures so crews are prepared to respond quickly when real emergencies occur.

The Farmington Fire Department thanked residents for their cooperation and understanding as firefighters continue training to better serve the community.
