Man Critically Injured in Shooting on I-94 in Minneapolis; Suspect Fled in Vehicle
MINNEAPOLIS, MN: A man was hospitalized in critical condition Saturday afternoon after he was shot on I-94 in Minneapolis, according to the Minneapolis Police Department.
The shooting was reported at approximately 4:38 p.m. Saturday, September 5, 2026, on eastbound I-94 between Portland Avenue and Chicago Avenue. According to preliminary information released by Minneapolis police, officers from the department’s Third Precinct initially responded after a shooting victim was located on the freeway at northbound I-35W near 11th Avenue. When officers arrived, they found an adult man suffering from a suspected gunshot wound to the abdomen.
Paramedics transported the man to a local hospital for treatment. Police said he was listed in critical condition.
Video Helps Police Locate Shooting Scene
Investigators determined that the shooting itself occurred on eastbound I-94 between Portland and Chicago avenues, separate from where officers ultimately located the injured man. Police said the shooting was captured on video, allowing officers to identify the location where the gunfire occurred. Officers subsequently responded to that portion of I-94 and collected evidence as part of the investigation.
Authorities have not released additional details about what was captured on the video or the circumstances leading up to the shooting. Police said the suspect left the area following the shooting, traveling eastbound on I-94 in a vehicle. No description of the suspect or vehicle was immediately released.
The Minnesota State Patrol and MnDOT also assisted at the scene by closing the roads and investigating.
Investigation Remains Ongoing
The Minneapolis Police Department’s Firearm Assault Shoot Team, or FAST, is investigating the shooting. As of Saturday evening, police had not announced an arrest or publicly identified a suspect. Authorities also had not released the identity of the wounded man.
The Minneapolis Police Department described the information released Saturday as preliminary and cautioned that details could change as investigators continue working to determine the circumstances surrounding the shooting. The incident remains under investigation.
