APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA - A local Scout has reached one of the highest honors in Scouting while leaving a lasting impact on a popular community destination.

Evan Johnson of Apple Valley has earned the rank of Eagle Scout, the highest rank in Scouting BSA, through his work with Troop 9298. The milestone marks years of dedication, leadership, and community involvement, culminating in a service project that benefits thousands of visitors each year.

As part of the Eagle Scout requirements, Johnson organized and led the construction and installation of benches along hiking trails at the Minnesota Zoo. The project focused on enhancing the guest experience by providing accessible resting points along frequently traveled walking paths. The effort brought together a wide range of volunteers, including fellow Scouts from Troop 9298, and was sponsored by Grace Lutheran Church, which assisted in planning and building the benches. Johnson also received support from friends at Eastview High School, including members of the school’s marching band and German club, demonstrating a strong community collaboration behind the project.

The newly installed benches are expected to serve zoo visitors for years to come, offering places to rest while exploring the expansive grounds. Beyond their practical use, the benches stand as a reflection of Johnson’s leadership, organization, and commitment to service, all core principles of the Eagle Scout rank.

Earning the Eagle Scout is a significant achievement attained by a small percentage of Scouts nationwide. It requires completing merit badges, demonstrating leadership within a troop, and planning and executing a large-scale service project that benefits the community.

With his project now complete, Johnson joins the ranks of Eagle Scouts who have made lasting contributions to their communities, in this case, creating a more welcoming and accessible experience for visitors at one of Minnesota’s most well-known attractions.
