DAKOTA COUNTY, MN: The Dakota County Sheriff's Office confirmed Thursday morning, August 6, 2026, that Michael William Robinson, 77, who had been missing since late July, has been found deceased following an extensive multi-day search on the Mississippi River.

According to the Sheriff's Office, Robinson was located on August 4, 2026, downstream from his boat after an extensive search involving both ground and water rescue teams.

"This is not the outcome any of us had hoped for. Our hearts are with Michael's family and loved ones during this incredibly difficult time," Dakota County Sheriff Joe Leko said in a statement.

Search Began After Boat Found Unoccupied

Robinson was first reported missing after he was last seen on the evening of Tuesday, July 28, 2026, near Prescott Island, which sits in the middle of the Mississippi River between Prescott, WI, and Hastings, MN.

Prescott Island, rough location where Mr. Robinson was last seen.

Authorities said Robinson, 77, was believed to have been wearing a yellow shirt and a silver bracelet on his right wrist. He normally wore glasses, although investigators noted he may not have had them with him. His boat was later discovered unoccupied near Prescott Island, prompting an extensive search involving both land and water resources.

On the day of his reported disappearance, Hastings Fire and Prescott Fire were called to the area, and a search of the river and the surrounding areas was conducted.

Over the following days, search crews continued combing the area in hopes of locating Robinson safely.

Multiple Agencies Assisted in Search

The Dakota County Sheriff's Office thanked the numerous agencies and specialized teams that assisted throughout the search effort, including:

  • Dakota County Sheriff's Office Dive Team

  • Dakota County Sheriff's Office Drone Team

  • Dakota County Special Operations Team

  • Pierce County Sheriff's Office

  • Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources

  • Northstar Search and Rescue

Investigation Continues

Authorities said preliminary findings indicate that the circumstances surrounding Robinson's death are not considered suspicious. The investigation remains ongoing, although the Sheriff's Office said no additional information will be released at this time.

The Sheriff's Office also expressed its condolences to Robinson's family and loved ones as they mourn his loss.
