New Felony Burglary Charge Against Dashawn Newton Following Lakeville Investigation, Citing Escalating Pattern of Sexual Offenses

Published: January 13, 2026

LAKEVILLE, MINNESOTA - A Burnsville man already facing serious felony charges for a violent New Year’s Day assault in Burnsville is now charged in a separate Lakeville case involving an alleged late-night garage intrusion and indecent exposure incident, according to newly filed court documents on Monday.

The Dakota County Attorney’s Office has charged Dashawn Jawaun Newton, 23, with First-Degree Burglary of an Occupied Dwelling, a felony, and Misdemeanor Indecent Exposure stemming from an incident reported in Lakeville on December 16, 2025.

Alleged Garage Intrusion in Lakeville

According to the criminal complaint, Lakeville police responded around 11:13 p.m. on December 16, 2025, to a 911 call at a residence in Lakeville. The adult female victim reported that she had just returned home from Walmart and parked in her driveway before entering her attached garage.

As she walked toward the service door leading into her home, she heard a noise and turned to find a man standing approximately three feet away from her inside her garage. The victim told police the man was making motions consistent with masturbation. While she initially could not confirm whether his genitals were exposed, she believed they were based on his actions.

The victim ordered the man to leave before entering her home and calling 911. Her mother was inside the residence at the time. The victim later told investigators she felt violated and frightened by the encounter.

Investigation Links Incident to Newton

Two days later, on December 18, Burnsville Police began investigating a series of indecent exposure incidents in their city that had occurred between October 31 and December 17, 2025. Investigators identified Newton as the suspect in those cases.

Newton was arrested by Burnsville Police on January 5, 2026. After being advised of his constitutional rights, court records state that Newton admitted to standing outside people’s homes with an erect penis because he derived pleasure from strangers’ reactions. He also admitted to exposing himself to a stranger on at least one occasion.

Police obtained a warrant to examine historical cell phone location data from Newton’s phone. Investigators say the data placed his phone in the area of the Lakeville victim’s residence just before the 911 call. Prior to that, the phone was located near the Lakeville Walmart, where the victim said she had been shopping.

Surveillance Footage Corroborates Timeline

On January 9, a detective reviewed surveillance footage from the Lakeville Walmart. The video showed the victim arriving in her SUV and entering the store. Shortly afterward, a smaller black SUV, consistent with a black Mercedes known to be driven by Newton, parked next to her vehicle.

Footage shows a man detectives recognized as Newton entering the store, walking past the self-checkout area while the victim was checking out, and leaving before her. The victim exited the store minutes later and departed, followed shortly thereafter by the same black SUV.

Charges and Bail Conditions

Newton is charged with:

  • Felony First-Degree Burglary (Occupied Dwelling)

  • Misdemeanor Indecent Exposure (Lewd or Indecent Behavior)

Prosecutors requested high bail, citing public safety concerns and an escalating pattern of behavior. Bail was set at $150,000 without conditions or $100,000 with conditions. The courts set bail at $120,000 without conditions or $60,000 with conditions.

Pattern of Alleged Escalation

In court filings, prosecutors noted that Newton is now charged in cases involving three different victims, all strangers. He is also a suspect in an additional indecent exposure incident pending Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension testing related to suspected biological evidence.

Prosecutors argue Newton’s conduct escalated from exposure incidents outside homes to entering an occupied dwelling and engaging in sexual behavior in front of a victim, warranting significant bail in the interest of public safety.

Prior Burnsville Assault Case

The new Lakeville charges follow Newton’s January 7, 2026, charging in Burnsville related to a violent New Year’s Day assault near Crystal Lake West. In that case, Newton is accused of restraining and threatening a 74-year-old woman during a struggle on a park trail. He faces felony charges of False Imprisonment and Threats of Violence, along with a misdemeanor assault charge.
