SAINT PAUL MN: A St. Paul man has been charged with first-degree assault—great bodily harm—following an incident in which an infant suffered serious injuries at a motel on University Avenue.

According to a criminal complaint, emergency responders were dispatched on March 16, 2026, to a Hotel in the 2100 block of University Avenue on a report of an infant experiencing breathing distress. The child was transported to a hospital for treatment.

Medical evaluations later determined the infant had sustained significant injuries, including internal and head trauma. Medical personnel indicated the injuries were not consistent with an accidental fall and were concerning for non-accidental trauma.

The defendant, identified as Corey Michael Hendrix, initially told law enforcement the injuries occurred after the infant fell while he was asleep. Investigators, however, noted discrepancies between that account and the medical findings.

In a recorded interview with investigators, Hendrix admitted he became frustrated while feeding the infant and applied force while handling the child. He further acknowledged dropping the infant and ultimately stated the act was related to his frustration.

Authorities also executed a search warrant at the motel room, where they reported observing unsanitary living conditions, including accumulated garbage, spoiled food, and soiled diapers.

Hendrix is charged with first-degree assault causing great bodily harm.

All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
