U.S. State Department Issues Worldwide Security Alert, Urges Americans to Exercise Increased Caution

Published: July 18th, 2026.

The U.S. Department of State is advising Americans around the world to exercise increased caution as heightened tensions in the Middle East continue to create what officials describe as a complex and evolving security environment with the potential for unforeseen escalation.

In a worldwide security alert, the State Department said Americans abroad—particularly those in the Middle East—should remain vigilant, closely monitor local news, and follow security guidance issued by the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate. Officials also warned that flight cancellations and periodic airspace closures could disrupt international travel.

The alert notes that U.S. diplomatic facilities, including those outside the Middle East, have previously been targeted. The State Department also cautioned that groups supportive of Iran could target U.S. interests overseas or locations associated with the United States and Americans around the world.

Americans traveling or living abroad are encouraged to enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) to receive the latest security alerts and emergency information from U.S. embassies and consulates. Officials also recommend reviewing destination-specific travel advisories before making international travel plans.

The State Department said the worldwide advisory is intended to help Americans remain informed as the international security situation continues to develop.
