EAGAN MN: Two men are facing felony charges in Dakota County after criminal complaints allege they burglarized an Eagan home and stole approximately $374,000 worth of silver bars and other precious metals.
According to separate Dakota County criminal complaints, Braidy Glen Allen and Christopher Lee Brandt have each been charged with first-degree burglary of an occupied dwelling and theft over $5,000.
According to the complaints, Eagan police were dispatched on April 18 to a residence on Tiffany Circle North for a report of a burglary that had occurred the day before. One resident reported hearing noises overnight, including sounds like doors opening and closing, but did not investigate at the time. Later that morning, the resident discovered the home was unusually cold and that the back door was open.
The homeowner initially reported that two 1,000-ounce silver bars had been taken from the downstairs area of the home. Each bar weighed approximately 70 pounds and was valued at about $80,000. The homeowner later reported that additional silver bars had also been stolen, bringing the total amount of silver taken to approximately 4,300 ounces, valued at about $374,000, according to the complaints.
Investigators observed sawdust, wood shavings, and two freshly drilled holes near the back sliding door, along with a wire-type tool left outside the residence. According to the complaints, investigators believed the holes had been drilled and the wire tool used to unlock the door.
The complaints state that Allen had previously lived with the residents and was aware that silver bars and other precious metals were stored in the basement.
According to the complaints, investigators later learned that a silver bar matching one of the stolen serial numbers had been sold to a coin dealer in Anoka by Brandt on April 18. Officers also obtained surveillance footage allegedly showing Allen selling silver to a metro-area business.
Police later executed a search warrant at a Champlin residence connected to Allen. Officers reported locating chunks of metal, melted scrap metal, a portable smelting pot, and bars of unknown metallic composition. Investigators also found paperwork and financial transaction cards bearing both Allen and Brandt’s names, according to the complaints.
According to the complaints, Allen and Brandt were located by Mille Lacs Tribal Police at Grand Casino Mille Lacs after a KOPS alert related to receiving stolen property. The complaints state both men declined to speak with investigators and were later released pending further investigation.
The complaints also state that a witness later contacted investigators and admitted previously lying to police. The witness told detectives that Allen and Brandt admitted to breaking into the Eagan home and stealing silver. According to the complaints, the witness said Brandt drilled a hole in the patio door to gain entry while Allen located the silver inside the home.
Court documents state much of the stolen silver has not been recovered.
Defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
