Man Facing Felony Charges After Alleged Retail Theft from Nordstroms
Published: May 3, 2026
APPLE VALLEY, MINNESOTA - A Minneapolis man is facing a felony charge in Dakota County after authorities say he attempted to steal merchandise from the Nordstroms in Apple Valley by using a method designed to bypass anti-theft security systems.
According to a criminal complaint filed by the Dakota County Attorney’s Office, Madar Yasin Olad, 29, of Minneapolis, has been charged with one count of felony possession of burglary or theft tools in violation of Minnesota Statute 609.59.
Incident Details
The charges stem from an incident reported on April 29, 2026, when officers with the Apple Valley Police Department were dispatched to the Nordstroms in Apple Valley for a reported theft.
Court documents state that store employees observed Olad selecting multiple items and concealing them inside a bag while inside the store. He then allegedly exited the business without paying for the merchandise. Employees confronted Olad outside the store, at which point he reportedly dropped the bag containing the unpaid items and fled the scene.
Investigators noted that several of the items taken from the store were equipped with anti-theft sensors. According to the complaint, those items had been wrapped in tinfoil, a method sometimes used to try to block or interfere with electronic security systems designed to trigger alarms when unpaid merchandise leaves a store.
The use of such materials is central to the charge filed, as Minnesota law treats the possession of tools or devices intended to aid in the commission of theft or burglary as a felony offense.
Law enforcement later located a suspect matching the description provided by store employees nearby and identified him as Olad.
Charges and Bail Conditions
Olad is charged with:
Count 1: Possession of Burglary or Theft Tools (Felony)
If convicted, the charge carries a maximum penalty of up to three years in prison and/or fines ranging from $1,500 to $5,000.
According to court records, the prosecution is requesting that bail be set at $3,000 without conditions or $1,500 with conditions, including being excluded from Nordstrom stores in Dakota County.
However, as of May 1, 2026, court records indicate that Olad was being held without bail or bond, unless released under specified conditions, as he waits for his first appearance set for May 4, 2026, at 1 PM in Hastings, Minnesota.
As with all criminal cases, Olad is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
