Standoff in Eagan Ends in Suspect's Suicide After Domestic Assault Report

Updated: 11:40 AM on June 16, 2025.

EAGAN, MINNESOTA—A domestic violence call escalated into a tense twelve-hour standoff in Eagan on Sunday, June 15, ultimately ending in tragedy when the armed suspect took his own life.

According to the Eagan Police Department, officers were dispatched at approximately 3:29 p.m. to a residence at 3664 Abbey Way, Unit B, following a 911 call from a woman who reported that her boyfriend had physically assaulted her, threatened to kill her, and discharged a firearm into the ceiling overnight. The victim, who sustained injuries believed to include a broken leg, told dispatchers she was trapped in a room inside the home. We are told she worked with officers via a cellphone and got her out of the house and to a waiting ambulance, where she was then transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. She was later released.

Rough location of SWAT incident.

Upon arrival, Eagan officers attempted to make contact with the suspect, a 49-year-old man and Eagan resident, but he refused to cooperate and barricaded himself inside the home. Throughout the standoff, the man fired his weapon several times inside the residence, prompting authorities to issue a shelter-in-place order for the surrounding area to protect nearby residents and to ensure public safety. By 5:30 p.m., the scene had drawn a significant law enforcement presence. Tactical officers deployed a flash bang device and repeatedly ordered the man to surrender, but these did not work.

Despite early speculation that the situation may have been connected to the ongoing manhunt for Vance Boelter, a suspect wanted in connection with a recent high-profile shooting, Eagan Police Chief officially clarified around 6:30 PM that this incident was not connected to that case.

Around 7:15 p.m., additional SWAT support arrived from the South Metro team, and the standoff continued into the early morning hours. After more than twelve hours of attempted negotiation, the suspect was found deceased from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

In addition to the Eagan Police, the response included assistance from multiple departments across the metro area: Bloomington, Apple Valley, Inver Grove Heights, Eden Prairie, Hopkins, Richfield, Edina, Minnetonka, Lakeville, Burnsville, and Crystal. Other agencies included the South Metro SWAT team, Eagan Fire Department, M Health Fairview EMS, Goodhue County Sheriff’s Office, and Dakota County Sheriff’s Office.

The identity of the suspect has not yet been released, and no other injuries were reported during the standoff.

According to the Eagan Police, a shelter-in-place cancellation was sent out around 4:07 AM. A second cancellation was posted on social media at 8:37 AM. According to Eagan officials, the new technology used for these shelter-in-place alerts targets cellphones in a geospecific area, allowing them to attempt to alert those who are close to an incident, but not the entire city.
